NZ Champion Eldivino Senor Mexico is now officially a "pet". He can still enter specialty shows as a Neutered Dog, but his All Breeds showing days are over.

We originally got Mexico as companion for his sister, Nikita. Despite a fabulous personality, he was a truly ugly puppy with no show potential at all (or so it seemed). At about 5 months, he miraculously blossomed into an actual Chihuahua and started to develop some very nice breed type, despite his crazy (almost) curly coat and signature "side tongue". We changed him to the show register when he was 6 months old in 2015 and decided to show him, just for fun, although there was nothing "fun" about grooming that coat into submission before each show...LOL.

Mexico took Puppy of Group in his first 2 shows. He went on to take a Best Puppy in Show at the 2015 Wanganuui Toy Show in Wellington, racked up several other Group wins, a Best NZ Bred in Show in 2016, collected 27 CC's along the way and got refused twice because of that damned (and adorable) side tongue.

He has been handled by so many nervous child handlers trying out dog showing for the first time, because of his sweet, reliable nature and won over scores of skeptics to the delights of owning a Chihuahua. We have a list of about 12 people who'd like me to "re-home" him at their place, right now.

Never gonna happen. Love this little guy to pieces. He is truly the best ambassador of the breed you could ask for. He is what a Chihuahua should be. Fortunately, his lines live on in his niece, Kyrie.

Just waiting now to get our application processed for him to become a Canine Companion animal so he can start visiting retirement homes in the new year where he can continue to bring joy and unconditional love to everyone he meets for many years to come.

Introducing Kitaco's Valkyrie Warrior

We have been waiting with great excitement for the arrival of Niki & Narci’s first litter, and, as all responsible breeders do, had an excellent plan in place to manage the birth and the two puppies we knew she was carrying. One of the pups was breach, but both had strong heartbeats (things easily checked when you have your own ultrasound machine at home). We x-rayed on Day 55, determined she would struggle to deliver the pups naturally, and scheduled a c-section for Monday morning (Day 61).

Niki, who we all assumed would be “way too posh to push”, decided otherwise. She woke TJ at about 3:00am on Saturday morning (Day 59 - just) with the breach puppy half delivered and firmly stuck at the shoulders. She had given us no warning the night before she was in the first, or indeed the second stage of labour, but here she was, doing it by herself, and now in dire trouble.

The breech pup was wedged firmly in the birth canal and too far out for surgical intervention. It took nearly twenty minutes to free her, by which time, poor Niki was exhausted. The little breach puppy – an absolutely perfect, beautiful white bitch – didn’t make it.

Shattered as we were, there was no time to dwell on the loss. We still had another pup to deliver. A scan showed her unborn pup with an increasing heartbeat – hardly surprising given the last few hours her mother had been through. Niki by this time had given up on the whole idea of natural birth. After a half an hour so, her contractions stopped and the second pup was no longer moving.

TJ had been consulting by phone with Meredith Barth, our “actual” vet all through the night, ever since the pup appeared. They made the call at 5:45 to deliver the remaining pup by Caesar while it was still viable. An early morning dash to the clinic and we opened her up around 6:30 am.

Meredith was able to get the pup out safely, but she was blue, flaccid, no heartbeat and not breathing. I was heartbroken. Meredith was gutted and sadly declared the pup dead.

TJ, however, was not prepared to lose another puppy. As soon as Meredith handed her the dead puppy, another perfect little white bitch, she went to work.

I have heard from some of her old clients, about TJ’s skill as a vet, particularly when it comes to reviving puppies, but this is the first time I have seen it in action. I am in awe. She literally sucked the fluid out of the pup with her mouth and began stimulating its heart and breathing for it. Within 20 or 30 seconds, TJ called, “I got a gasp”. Meredith (who was still in the surgery closing up Niki) warned her sadly that it was probably just a dying agonal gasp, but then TJ, still sucking, rubbing and breathing for the pup, yelled. “Got another one! She’s turning pink!”.

Finally, we all heard the most wonderful sound we have ever heard – a tiny squeak. TJ had snatched this little girl back from death with sheer determination and skill. You can’t imagine the joy we all felt, after such a long and harrowing night.

Within a few minutes our pup was squawking loudly, a strong, beautiful little bitch with a perfect head and great proportions who looks like she might be a peach parti-colour. She weighed in at 118 grams (her sister was 123g). Nikita, it turns out, is an exceptional mother. After a few tube feeds overnight to help her along, our puppy is feeding on her own and has already gained 5 grams.

Sorry for the long post, but I know there were many people anxiously awaiting this litter, and this is easier than repeating the story over and over. I would also like to thank the wonderful Meredith Barth and her exceptional surgical skills for keeping Nikita safe, as well as the many experienced breeders both in NZ and Europe, who have been there for us over the past 24 hours with both material and moral support. Special thanks to Tracy, who loaned us an additional heat disk, Helen, who gave us some of the goat’s milk she had on hand for her Clumber litter, as well as Susanne, Susan, Gloria, Savi and many others, all of whom have given us much welcome moral support by sharing their similar stories.

In keeping with her father’s name, Narcissus, we have stayed with the ancient mythology theme and named our little fighter “Kitaco’s Valkyrie Warrior”, after the Valkyrie who faced down Hela, the Norse Goddess of Death. Her pet name will be “Kyrie”.

The name is, of course, subject to Dogs NZ approval, but we feel than shouldn’t be a problem considering our alternatives are Kitaco’s Fuck That Was Close (TJ's fave) or Kitaco’s Hypoxic Nightmare.

We will post progress reports on Kyrie as she grows and flourishes. And, in case you were wondering: No, she is not for sale.

4 of the top 8 BOB Long Coat winners in New Zealand this year are Kitaco dogs

The Dogzonline.co.nz final ranking for 2017 is out and we are thrilled that four of the NZ top eight Long Coats in 2017 are Kitaco dogs - that's our entire show team now Mexico has retired. She is a 13 week old Labrador from the fabulous Glenstar Kennels. She is the cousin to another Lab we owned several years ago - Titan - who was responsible for most of the trouble Loki got into when he was a pup. (Actually, Loki thought up the trouble and got Titan to do the heavy lifting... LOL)

Sadly, Titan died a few years ago, but we always intended to get another Lab, even with all the Chihuahuas. Although we will show her, Ghost is more than a show dog, or a pet. She is an important part of our never-ending quest for well-rounded, great temperaments in our Chis. Like Loki, who can handle anything, our pups will now grow up with their very own Labrador and be much happier when they go to homes who already have a larger dog as a part of the family.

Ghost is already proving her worth. She is chill and adorable and all the Chihuahuas have already made friends with her. Even Fifi only loses her shit when she's nose to nose with Ghost. We're hopeful that with a few more days to settle in, they will soon be the best of friends.

No, you didn't buy a Kitaco Chihuahua from a pet shop

It has come to our attention that some unscrupulous pet shops in New Zealand are claiming the puppies they sell (not Chihuahuas that we know of, but other breeds) are from registered NZKC breeders who had a litter they didn't want to register.A bulldog breeder recently received a call from a new owner who bought their pup from Nicholls Pet Shop in Dunedin, wanting details of the dog's parents. She hadn't bred the litter, didn't know about the litter, nor had anything to do with it or the sire and dam.

I believe there is legal action pending over this, but we just want reiterate that no Kitaco Chihuahua will ever be sold through a pet shop. If you ever find a shop claiming this is where their litter came from, please let us know, asap. Not only is this fraud on the part of the pet shop, but all our dogs are sold with contracts and a re-homing guarantee to approved owners who we have personally checked out.

If you are thinking of buying any breed of dog from a pet shop, ask for the breeder's contact details BEFORE you purchase the dog and contact the breeder to make sure what the pet shop is telling is the truth.

Clean Sweep at the DCC Open Show and Ribbon Parade

Our Kitaco kids did us proud at the DCC Superheroes and Supervillans Ribbon Parade and Open Show in Christchurch on July 2. The coat pattern has only shown up in the breed in the past 15 years or so, and has been introduced by cross-breeding. The merle coat has also started showing up in several other breeds such as French Bulldongs, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, and Miniature Pinschers, to name a few. Merles come in a variety of patterns, including red and blue.

The merle coloring does not occur naturally in Chihuahua DNA, but the gene is dominant so one of the parents MUST be a merle for the gene to be expressed. This is not a recessive gene that suddenly pops up unexpectedly. gene. The only it way it got into the gene pool was by cross breeding a Chihuahua with another breed and then falsifying the pedigree dog registration, somewhere back down the line.

Bottom line: if you buy a merle Chihuahua, you are not getting a purebred Chihuahua, just a mixed breed (even though it might have papers). Because the merle gene comes from much larger dogs, the chances are you will get a very "large" Chihuahuas as a result of the mixed breed dog that was introduced years ago to get the merle coloring. And the chances are high that it might be deaf, blind or both, if not when you buy it, then at some time in the future.

But even if the dog is simply large and pretty, a much more serious and important issue is the much higher occurrence of health problems in merle Chihuahuas.

The problem comes from how the moerle gene works to produce the color. It does this by acting on other genes which it lightens and whitens and the whitening is what causes the defects. When a dog's coat is whitened, the pigment inside the ear and eye also whitens, making the dog DEAF and BLIND as the nerves endings atrophy and die.

According to Idexx, makers if the merle genetic blood test, "Health Problems Associated with the Merle Allele - Both heterozygous merle (Mm) and homozygous double merle (MM) dogs may exhibit auditory and ophthalmic abnormalities including mild to severe deafness, increased intra ocular pressure, ametropia, microphthalmia and colobomas. The double merle genotype may also be associated with abnormalities of skeletal, cardiac and reproductive systems."

Heterozygous mean one parent is a merle, the other is a non-merle. Also known as single merles, or Mm. Homozygous means both parents are merle, also known as double merles, or MM.

Based on information about the merle gene in Dachshunds, merles with one merle parent and the other that is a non-merle have a 36.8% chance of developing some sort of hearing loss. Other problems such as eye problems were also apparent.

A merle breeder may admit that there are problems when breeding two merles together, they often don't tell potential owners about the problems when breeding a merle to a non-merle, which is the what most merle breeders do.

You can (and do) get deaf and blind puppies from this type of breeding. If you are determined to have a merle Chihuahua, accept the fact that you may not get a healthy dog, despite how cute and healthy it seems on delivery. . A puppy with impaired hearing or vision can appear to be fine. The problems may not become apparent for months.

Because io health problems inherent inbreeding merles and the questionable parentage required to create them, merle Chihuahuas are banned in many countries including New Zealand.

We do breed merle's at Kitaco and DNA test or dogs to ensure they are free of the merle gene.

For more information on merles, check out this study by Dr. Willis.

Why buy from an Accredited Breeder?

When you consider bringing a Chihuahua into your home, you might think the best thing to do is save one from a shelter or a rescue organisation and we would never discourage anyone from bringing a rescue Chihuahua into their home. We admire the people who work with these dogs, who are often the victims of neglect or mistreatment, and the enormous amount of work they do to rehabilitate them.

There would be far fewer dogs in shelters, however, if they had been purchased from a responsible breeder in the first place.

Probably the worst places to get a Chihuahua is a pet shop. Pet shops source their stock (and to them, that’s what a puppy is - “stock”) from backyard breeders, or worse, commercial breeding operations which are simply puppy mills. These mills pump out puppies for profit from dogs who are typically housed in crowded, unhygienic conditions where the bitches live miserable lives in small cages.

Buying from a pet shop not only keeps these awful places in business, but contributes to the dogs who end up in shelters. Pet shops are only interested in a sale, and have no care or interest in the welfare of a dog or its new owner’s ability to care for it, once the money has been handed over and the dog has left the store.

Only slightly less irresponsible are the backyard breeders, who breed for profit. You will find many of these on TradeMe. They are Chihuahua owners who have figured out there is a tidy profit to be made from people who can’t resist a cute puppy photo.

The standard of care varies greatly among backyard breeders, but you can be sure of 2 things: they are breeding to make money and they do not want any responsibility for the dog once they have sold it to you. Health problems? Too bad. Genetic faults? They had no idea.

Careless and/or ignorant breeding can predispose Chihuahuas to hereditary afflictions like dislocating kneecaps, eye problems, permanent hair-loss (common among Chihuahuas who carry the blue “merle” gene), and aggression, as well as genetic conditions such as heart diseases, autoimmune disorders, and seizures.

Many of these breeders will claim NZKC registration, and that might be the case, but consider, to become an “NZKC Breeder” you fill out a form and send in your money. An “NZKC Registered Litter” is also just a case of filling out a form and paying a fee. There are no inspectors to ensure you have any clue about breeding and no guarantee the pedigree you are given is legitimate, as it relies entirely on the honesty and integrity of the breeder.

The cost of breeding healthy dogs

Anybody with a male and female dog can call themselves a breeder and sell you a puppy. A properly health tested puppy, however, comes at cost. It starts with testing the health of both parents and continues through the mating, pregnancy and rearing of the litter. "Vet checked" is not health testing. It is the bare minimum any reasonable person might do, and should not be confused with the extensive health care provided by an Accredited Breeder.

Remember, a Chihuahua giving birth to 4 average sized pups (@125 grams) is the equivalent of a 70kg woman giving birth to 4 11lb babies! We are acutely aware of the dangers of whelping and rearing pups, and take every precaution we can to prevent harm to the mother or her babies.

Health testing costs include DNA testing to ensure both parents are clear of genetic conditions. It means annually certifying both parents' hearts and patellas are clear and a specialist eye examination to exclude eye issues common in Chihuahuas. All of these certificates are available for you to see but this testing runs to about $300 per dog per year.

It can mean a stud fee of more than a $1000 for a healthy, suitable sire, even more if frozen semen is used from an imported sire to improve the genetic diversity of our narrow gene pool.

The bitch will be scanned at 28 days to confirm pregnancy and x-rayed around 55 days so the heads of the pups can be measured to ensure they will fit through the birth canal. If not, then a Caesarian is certain which can cost anywhere from $900 but usually costs more because naturally, the bitch will go into labour at the worst possible moment- 2:30 am on a public holiday is a popular time - in which case the delivery could cost more than $2000.

The mother will also require nutritional supplements, calcium and additional feeding throughout her gestation and following the birth. We literally do not leave the side of our bitches for the first three weeks after the pups are born, to ensure the mother does not fall ill from milk fever or a calcium deficiency. (We don't even factor the cost of this 24 hour veterinary care into the calculation)

Before a single pup is born, the cost can be approaching $4000 for a properly health tested litter where the mother receives gold-standard care. Consider what a backyard breeder must spend on health care when they sell their pups for $800-$1250 and are still making a profit.

Assuming the pups require minimal medical intervention to thrive, they will still need to be vaccinated at 8 and 12 weeks, micro-chipped and registered with the NZKC and the CAR. This will cost another $200-$300 per puppy.

In addition to the above, our pups come with their own airline approved crate, show lead, bed and handbook, training lead and personalised blanket along with a lifetime re-homing guarantee. If you live locally in Christchurch we also offer a boarding service. Your dog can come back and stay with us rather than putting them into a boarding kennel if you are going away on holiday or into hospital, etc., provided we are not away showing during that time.
