It’s the National Dog Show Week, which means there are a crazy number of shows going on here in Christchurch – 34 of them to be precise. Most are Specialty Breed shows, with a couple of All Breeds shows thrown in for good measure, all leading up to the main event at the end of the week.
We entered only 3 of the shows – the Chihuahua Specialty Show, the Canterbury Toy Dog Society Show, the National Prelude Show and of course, the National Dog Show. It’s far too exhausting to put Chihuahuas through so many shows (except possibly Miss Mona who apparently has Red Bull running through her veins, LOL), so we limited their exposure to the shows we considered important.
The Canterbury Toy Dog Society Show falls well and truly under that banner and also marked only the second time that our junior handlers have handled our dogs in a Champ Show (the first was Monday’s Chihuahua Specialty show where they did brilliantly).
The Team did really well, with Ava in the Long Coats taking the Best Bitch CC and Best Open Bitch of Breed and Serena, so confidently handled by Paige, taking the Reserve Best Bitch and Best Junior Bitch of Breed.
In the Smooth Coats, Scotty took the Reserve Best of Breed and Junior of Breed.
The star of the show though was Candy (Kitaco Hard Candy Christmas) who took the Best Baby Puppy of Breed, but then went on to take Best Baby Puppy in Show!
She is such a sweet dog and irresistible in the hands of her 9-year-old handler, Shelby. Both girls really impressed the Judge, Mr Zachary Tan from Australia, who took time after the show to talk to the girls and tell them how well they did.
We could not be prouder of our handlers. They adore the dogs and their connection with their dogs really does show in the ring.
So waiting now for the final results of the National Dog Show tomorrow, and hoping the changeover to daylight savings doesn’t trip us up and we're late for the judging!
