What Is the Best Vaccination Age for Chihuahua Pups? 6 vs 8 Weeks Explained

We got a lot of questions when we posted on Facebook, the photo of our latest listter being vaccinated at 6 weeks, asking why we do this, and if it was advisable. The truth is, vaccinating and microchipping Chihuahua puppies at 6 weeks (following Nobivac guidelines) allows early "paws-off" socialisation and a stress-free vet experience before their first developmental fear period kick in around 8 weeks.

Having got the legal bit out of the way, let me explain - for our litters, starting early is a deliberate choice designed to protect both their health and their emotional resilience.

1. Socialisation Before the First Fear Period

Chihuahuas are remarkably bright and perceptive, which means early experiences shape them dramatically. A puppy’s primary socialisation window opens around 3 to 4 weeks, but right around the 8-week mark, puppies typically enter their first developmental fear period.

During a fear period, a single overwhelming or scary experience can leave a lasting negative impression. If a puppy’s very first vet visit or microchip needle happens right when that fear period kicks in at 8 weeks, it can easily feel overwhelming.

By doing our initial vaccination and microchip at 6 weeks, they aren't bothered at all: At 6 weeks, puppies are naturally curious, resilient, and relaxed. They breeze right through their microchipping and first injection without registering it as a big deal.

We always bring mum along to the appointment. Having her right there in the room gives our puppies complete comfort and security, making the entire experience feel completely normal and safe. Their very first clinical experience happens well before the fear window opens, establishing the vet clinic as a calm, happy place right from the start.

2. Safe Socialisation: Out and About (Feet Off the Ground!)

Under Nobivac vaccination guidelines, core puppy protocols can begin as early as 6 weeks. This initial dose gives our puppies a valuable head start on building baseline immunity.

Does this mean a 6-week-old Chihuahua puppy can run around on the grass at a public park? Absolutely not. Their little paws should never touch public ground until they're fully protected, as parvo and other environmental risks remain serious threats.

However, socialisation doesn't require a dog park. Because Chihuahuas are so compact, early socialisation is effortless to do safely:

We can take our puppies out in the puppy stroller to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of traffic, cafes, and busy environments.

They can safely attend our weekly playgroup with fully vaccinated, gentle adult dogs. We have a pen and a rug whre they are confined but they can meet and see other dogs and begin learnng how to interact with other hoomans and dogs.

We take them for car rides and expose them to new sounds and movement early. This builds a fearless foundation before they hit 8 weeks.

By the time our puppies receive their 2nd vaccination at 10 weeks, they have already accumulated weeks of rich, confidence-boosting real-world exposure without ever taking an unnecessary health risk.

In my opinion as both a vet and a breeder, early vaccination isn't just about preventing physical illness, it's one of the most effective behavioral tools we have. Starting at 6 weeks protects our Chihuahuas' physical health while helping them grow into the bold, confident, and fearless companions they were born to be.
