What a crazy weekend of contrasts at the Waimakariri Kennel Association shows at Mandeville. The weather was - to put it mildly - utterly miserable on Saturday. Wet, windy and, according to the weather app, the 13' degrees "feels like 5 degrees".
In Show 1, in the Long Coats, under Australian judge, Joyce Sullivan, Serena - who is bothered by absolutely nothing - beat all the oldies and won Best of Breed, the Best Bitch CC, Best Puppy of Breed and then went on to take Best Puppy of Group. She lost out in the Best Puppy in Show line-up to an Irish Wolfhound puppy! So funny to see the smallest and the biggest breed lineup against each other. As I said - contrasts!
Ava took the Best NZ of Breed and the Reserve Best Bitch CC while Narci took Reserve Best Dog.
We left Ben at home because he had a dental last week and still hasn't forgiven Tracey for the indignity of it all. We're hoping he'll have forgotten about it by next weekend's shows, but he's pretty pissed at her, so who knows. LOL.
Anyway, our smooth coats aren't anywhere near the Drama Llama than Ben is, and Scotty, who seems to be as unflappable as Serena, took Best of Breed, Best Dog and Best Baby Puppy of Breed. Honeslty, he is such a little trouper.
Raven, on the other hand, took one look at the rain, refused to take another step (they were tabled under cover and only had to do a short walk out in the weather) and said "nope". Despite this, the judge still awarded her the Best Bitch and Reserve Best of Breed.
In Show 2, under Australian judge, Deidre Crofts, Serena did it again, winning Best of Breed, the Best Bitch CC, Best Puppy of Breed and Best Puppy of Group. This time Ava stepped up and tool the Reserve Best of Breed, the reserve Bitch CC and the Best NZ Bred of Breed. Narci took the Reserve Dog CC again.
We only showed Scotty in the Smooth coats for the 2nd show, Raven having made her opinion of showing in the rain quite clear in the first show. She stayed snuggled up on the heat mat in the trolley trying to find ways to wiggle out of her jacket. Scotty just soldiered on and again took the Best of Breed, the Best Dog and the Best Baby Puppy of Breed.
So that brings us to Day 2. Instead of the bitterly cold winter weather we had on Saturday, we got a glorious spring day! 17 degrees, sun shining, no wind... just delightful. Talk about contrasts!
And this time, under NZ Judge Mark Anderson, Narci (who was in the happiest mood) took Best of Breed, Best Dog and Best Open of Breed. Ava took NZ Bred of Breed and Reserve Best Bitch and Serena took Best Puppy of Breed.
Scotty and Raven - who was perfectly happy to walk on dry grass - did us so proud. Scotty took Best of Breed again, along with Best Dog and Best Baby Puppy of Breed, while Raven took Best Bitch and the Reserve Best of Breed.
With only one show on Sunday and the fact that we only live 5 minutes away from the show grounds, we were home by lunchtime, which made a nice change. Thanks to Haley for her help showing the Smooth coats, the WKA committee for some great shows under very trying conditions, and a shout out to the judges and stewards who were out in that weather all day on Saturday, and still managed to retain their sense of humour, even if they had lost all feeling in their extremities.
Pretty good weekend for us - 3 Shows, 3 Best of Breed (Long Coat). 3 Best of Breed (Smooth Coat), 1 Reserve Best of Breed (Long Coat), 2 Reserve Best of Breed (Smooth Coat), 3 Best NZ Bred of Breed (Long Coat), 1 Best Open of Breed (Long Coat), 1 Dog CC, 2 Bitch CCs, 3 Baby Puppy of Breed (Smooth Coat) and 2 Puppy of Groups.
